Why you should be at NUS Conference 2018.

Wednesday 08-11-2017 - 11:50

From 20-24th November you can put yourself forward to go to the NUS Conference. Here’s a quick rundown of what it is & why you should get involved.

Firstly, what’s the NUS?

The NUS is the National Union of Students. (You might have heard of their student discount card – they do other stuff too!)

The NUS exists to represent students to make sure you are listened to and supported. There are 563 Student Unions in the NUS, meaning it’s the largest student organisation in the UK, representing millions of students.

Its successes include securing the exemption to pay Council Tax for students, the student railcard, establishing a Lad Culture/harassment taskforce and much more.

What would I be putting myself forward for?

This election is to decide which LJMU students attend the National Union of Students Conference to represent the views of all 20,000 LJMU students. (A pretty cool opportunity.)

Six delegates from LJMU will go, one of which will be the President of LiverpoolSU, Yasmin Ibrahim.

One of our previous delegates, Sophiehannah, said “It’s a busy, fun three days. You get to meet likeminded people, grow your networking circle and you don’t even have to be politically active – you just need to have opinions and be passionate about making change for students! The highlight for me was voting for the President.”

What happens at the NUS National Conference?

The NUS conference is a three day event held in Glasgow on the 27-29 March 2018, where NUS Delegates from universities all over the country meet to:

  • Discuss ideas (policy). Policy will be submitted by SU’s before the event and will be voted on. If it passes, the NUS will work on it for the following year.

  • Elect the new leaders of the NUS for the coming year (this includes the President, five Vice Presidents and 15 part-time executives). They are responsible for leading the National Union and being the face of students in the media, so it is important that these are people you want to be represented by.

  • Make sure the leaders are doing their job. The President and Vice Presidents (who will have been in office since 1 July 2017) will have submitted reports before the event for you to read, which they will discuss and answer any questions on.

I want to put myself forwards. What should I do now?

You can nominate yourself between 20-24 November 2017 on our website.

On the nomination form you’ll need to confirm your contact details, and then you can choose to upload a photo, add a slogan of up to 6 words and/or a paragraph of up to 100 words. Here you can explain why you’re running, what you want to discuss at conference and how you intend on representing LJMU students.

Then you’ll need to get other JMU students to vote for you during the voting period, 28–30 November. Talk to your friends, people on your course and people around campus during 3 days of voting to win your place.

You can email elections@ljmu.ac.uk for guidance at any point in the process.

You can read up more about the conference and the elections process here.
