Welcome Fair

This year’s Freshers Fair was bigger than ever. Immense queues circulated the Adelphi Hotel in Ranelagh Place where it was held this year. Throughout the two days of the 15th and 16th of September many students came to visit the fair hoping to grab themselves bags of freebies and to sign up to the variety of clubs and societies we have here at LJMU. These included the DJ society, Jiu Jitsu, badminton, dance and many more.

Over 95 stalls encompassed two halls in the Adelphi Hotel, including Domino's giving away free pizza, Andrew Collinge Graduates hairdressers handing out discounted offers and Level, the brand new student nightclub giving away bags of goodies.

The clubs and societies at LJMU used the majority of the stalls to encourage students to join. Alice Outten, a member of the Looprevil Radio joined when she was a ‘fresher’ last year. She explains it as her ‘favourite thing about university’ and added, “It’s helping me towards my dream career as a presenter and has given me loads of new experiences'.”

Kieran Thompson, a member of the skiing and snowboarding society, can’t emphasise enough how great it is being a member of this unique society. He said, 'It’s something different, a great way to meet new people and a big trip is held every year which is amazing.”

Every year a new club or society is formed, from Zumba in 2012 created by our very own Sam Davys (LiverpoolSU President 14-15), to the brand new Cycling Society this year formed by Callum Hough who said, “I had an interest in cycling but realised that there was no cycling society in LJMU so I decided to form my own, hoping that students will want to get involved.” A new member of the club Danielle Millett explains that, “It is a good way to get around to and from university, and keeps you fit at the same time.”

Many students were amazed at how much stuff they could get involved in at University. However, Amy Toolis, studying Forensics, Sociology and Criminal Justice at LJMU expressed her love for the best thing at the fresher's fair the ‘free pizza.’ We’re sure that was a lot of student’s opinions too - it was definitely ours when I we were ‘freshers’!

Throughout the two hectic days the atmosphere was incredible, from the Freestyle Dance gang performing regular routines on the main stage, to the DJ society mixing music throughout the day and even the Jiu Jitsu club providing demonstrations of advanced self-defence.

Here at LiverpoolSU we feel that joining a club or society is a great way to meet new people and gain experiences from all aspects of university life. If you’re interested it’s not too late just visit our website at www.liverpoolsu.com/groups and email the specific club or society to get involved.

Our own VP Activities, Josh McDowell has decided to embark on the ‘Join with Josh’ programme, a series of events where students can get involved and try out new clubs and societies alongside Josh. For more info please visit www.liverpoolsu.com/events.
