On the 2nd April 2014 Liverpool’s two principal Universities will compete in the annual Liverpool Varsity. University of Liverpool and its 21,000 students will take on Liverpool John Moores’ 24,000 strong student body in 15 different sports.
The day will predominantly take place at Wyncote, the University of Liverpool’s outdoor sport facility. Male and female students will be competing in Football, Hockey, Lacrosse and Rugby League with the day culminating in the Rugby Union varsity match. Wyncote will welcome over a thousand students from both Universities to support and represent their respective teams. University societies will be showcasing student talent and entrepreneurship selling merchandise and providing entertainment for their fellow students. Affiliates of the two Universities are also invited down to enjoy the competitive sport and camaraderie on display as well as the positive atmosphere created by all involved.
Several other sporting clubs will be competing across both University campuses. Two netball teams will be participating at JMU’s IM Marsh facilities. The University of Liverpool will host swimming, badminton, handball, basketball and volleyball in their newly refurbished Sports and Fitness centre. Student golfers will take to the Royal Liverpool golf club whilst rowers go head to head at Runcorn and Ski and snow enthusiasts will compete at the Chill Factor venue.
Everyone involved in this event is extremely excited. University of Liverpool’s Athletic Union president Matt Ward is convinced that “a rejuvenated varsity is exactly what students in this city need. A well promoted Varsity will not only increase awareness of university sport and its high standard but will also help reignite the pride and loyalty students feel to their respective University”.
A promotional video is currently being made, with viewing figures forecasted to reach 10,000 in the first week of publication. The event embodies sportsmanship and the two Universities will be competing for the pride of Liverpool. It will highlight the importance of sport in bringing people together and showcase positive student activities.
