Students' Union: expectation vs reality

Expectation vs reality

We asked some of our students their expectations of what a Students' Union was, vs the reality of what it actually is. Here's what we found out...

Expectation: Going to uni alone and not knowing how to make new friends.

Reality: It can be a daunting feeling coming to university. Often, new students arrive without knowing many people, or none at all. But, you aren't alone. We have over 27,000 who all experience the same thing. Luckily, we offer many ways to make friends quick and easy for everyone. By joining one of our societies, sports teams or student networks you will meet like-minded people with similar interests, making friends and memories to last a lifetime.

Expectation: You already need to be really good at a sport or hobbie to join a group.

Reality: This is not the case. In fact, we encourage students to try out new things, learn new skills and create new hobbies that they will enjoy. But, that doesn't mean that if you are a pro in your field, you can't join a team. Enhance your skills further and join a team you're passionate about, and you might go down in histroy. All are welcome.

Expectation: Students' Unions are just about partying.

Reality: We want to make sure every single one of our students' experience at JMSU is a positive, comfortable and memorable one. Whilst we know students enjoy going out, and encourage to explore the city and what it has to offer, we provide many different ways to get involved within JMSU. We have our Give it a Go programme ;hosting many events in and around the university campuses to ensure you're making the most of your time here (and having fun at the same time). We also take trips further afield so you can experience new and exciting things.

Expectation: I'll be too busy with my studies to be apart of JMSU.

Reality: We work closely with the university to guarantee you get the study/personal life balance you need. Ensuring ways to further your skills, make new friends, campaign for what you believe in, volunteer or gain employment opportunities is what JMSU is all about - we want to elevate your personal and professional experiences throughout your studies.

Expectation: Democratic structures are not something I know about, so I can't get involved.

Reality: As your Students' Union, we represent you and your voice, opinions and concerns. We are student led, which means that students truly are at the heart of what we do. There are many ways that you can get involved with student representation, whether that be a Student Rep or run as a Student Officer. If you want change to happen, or want to be a part of how we run things, you can be a part of the JMSU team (with lots of support and training form us).
