On 14 October Dan Cole, our Vice President Community Engagement, chaired the first meeting between the Merseyside Police and Crime Commissioner and Students’ Union representatives.
Police and Crime Commissioner Jane Kennedy was very receptive to learning about key issues that affected students – burglary in student areas, theft of bicycles, incidents of taxi drivers refusing to do short journeys and safety on nights out in Liverpool.
There was also discussion about the limited options that street drinkers have to spend the day somewhere safe and the potential for many to sleep rough at night.
It was suggested that students make far greater use of the online national service to register any valuable possessions: https://www.immobilise.com/index.php
We were advised that Liverpool City Council are responsible for taxi licencing, so if there are serious complaints about a taxi service you should note the registration number and report it to the Council.
Whilst it’s not a compulsory scheme, the door staff of many bars and clubs around the country sign up to the ‘Safe Haven’ badge. This means staff will keep an eye on someone if they appear particularly drunk. We weren’t sure how many Liverpool bars or clubs have this – but would like to encourage them to take it up. Our Scholars bar holds the national Best Bar None Award and this assistance to anyone who needs it is part of the commitment we already make to our customers.
The next of these meetings is planned for January. If you’ve got any issues you’d like Dan to raise with the Commissioner then please get in touch with him and let him know.
