We’re marking International Pronouns Day (Wednesday 19 October) by teaming up with LJMU to provide pronouns badges for our students and staff to wear with pride.

As an inclusive organisation, we want to make sure everyone feels welcome and show solidarity with those who have been made to feel uncomfortable or isolated by people who deliberately or unintentionally use incorrect pronouns for them. Pronouns badges provide us with an important opportunity to help transform society and celebrate people’s multiple, intersecting identities.

If you would like a pronouns badge, you can pick one up free of charge from The Student Life Building Reception Desk. Badges will be given out on a first come first served basis.
If you miss out on claiming a badge or can't find one which has your pronouns, please email
studentsunion@ljmu.ac.uk

What is a pronoun?

A pronoun is a word used in place of a noun and provides a way of referring to someone without using their name. Examples include he, she, her or his, and people tend to associate these pronouns with specific gender identities. Using pronouns incorrectly by assuming someone’s gender may cause upset or frustration, so it is important to know and use a person's correct pronouns in order to foster inclusion, make people feel respected and valued, and affirm their gender identity.

Seven steps to being a pronouns pro and active ally:

  • Wear your pronouns badge
  • Introductions: share your pronouns with others and ask others for theirs
  • Online spaces: include your pronouns with your name in Zoom/ Teams meetings
  • Sending an email? Add your pronouns to your email signature
  • Use pronouns incorrectly? Acknowledge, apologise, correct yourself and move on
  • Hear someone else use pronouns incorrectly? Correct them respectfully.
  • Use gender-neutral pronouns like ‘they/them/their’ when you don’t want to assume someone’s gender or don’t know someone’s pronouns.
