There are over 30,000 students and staff at LJMU, from over 100 different nationalities?! Liverpool is home to many international students as they study at LJMU, and we take pride in that.
However, many international students in the UK face many challenges, including the limited number of working hours they are allowed to utilize while studying. The current cap, set at 20 hours per week during term time, has been a source of frustration for many students who struggle to make ends meet while studying, especially with the Cost of Living crisis right now in the UK.
As an international student myself, I understand the difficulties they face. Providing a better experience for international students at LJMU is one of my manifesto points. Therefore, I am joining other Student Officers all over the UK to push the Working Hours Campaign, a national movement to make a significant impact and positive change in international students’ lives. I believe that the current restrictions on working hours limit the ability of international students to support themselves financially and to fully integrate into UK society. It also creates a burden on universities and other organizations that support international students, as many students are forced to rely on financial assistance from these institutions.
We hope that by running campaign it will lift the cap of working hours for international students in the UK and level the playing field between international students and home students.
I know that change can be achieved. In November 2022, the Canadan government changed policy to lift the working hour limit for international students. Currently, the British government are considering doing the same, but we need your help in order for it to be complete. We are calling out to all LJMU students, staff and stakeholders to stand in solidarity with us to make changes in this government policy. We believe that by allowing international students to work more hours will not only benefit the UK economy by creating jobs and contributing to the country's wealth but will also improve international students’ overall experience at university. By advocating for policy changes that would allow international students to work more hours, the campaign is helping to create a more inclusive and supportive environment for these students.
Please join me to make an impactful change for international students, get involved and let the student voices truly heard!
