Good Deed Day
Over the course of their time at University, many students will take part in volunteering placements and activities. Whether this is to support a cause, raise money for charity or gain invaluable work experience, helping others is at the very heart of what they do.
National Student Volunteering week takes place each February, celebrating and showcasing the phenomenal work of students across the UK in one big wave of volunteering. Set around a specific topic each year, the theme of 2014 for Liverpool students was food poverty. Students from LJMU gathered for LiverpoolSU’s ‘Good Deed Day’ in collaboration with students from Liverpool Guild and City of Liverpool College, collecting food for local foodbanks and raising awareness of poverty in our own city.
Food was collected by student volunteers at the Haigh Building and at Avril Robarts on Monday 24th February. Shopping lists were given to passers-by, suggesting store cupboard essentials that can help tide over people in need. Plus students at a central collection point in Clayton Square even received a visit from Lord Mayor Gary Millar!
On Wednesday 26th February, LJMU students gave up more of their time to sort through the enormous 319.80kg of food collected. Last year, North and Central Liverpool foodbanks helped to feed over 12,000 people highlighting the need for this good work.
Megan, one of the students helping out on ‘Good Deed Day’, said: “I’ve never seen so much food, it was like a supermarket! We had to arrange it on shelves and according to date. It was such a different experience and I’m so glad I did it!”
It’s shocking to think that communities are still living in poverty, but with the help of students across the UK, we can continue working towards a better future for all.
