Being an International Student at LJMU - Sherebano, part-time International Students Officer

Hi, I’m Sherebano, and I’m a final year student at LJMU.  As a student from Sri Lanka and your International part-time Student Officer, I wanted to take the opportunity to discuss what it’s like being an international student at LJMU as part of International Students Day celebrations

I remember when I landed for the first time in a new city I had never been to, after my 12-hr flight, I felt overwhelmed trying to find my way around this city and get settled in. I had to become very independent and learn how to take care of myself in a very short time frameAs it turns out, I fell in love with the city and I am pleased that I chose to study here. Here’s why:

  • Making friends is made easy

Liverpool is such a friendly city, and there’s countless opportunities to meet new people – whether its through social activities, work, or studying. As advice to future international students considering studying here, I recommend staying in student accommodation - especially in first year – to boost your opportunities to meet new people and develop friendships. Another good way to meet people is by joining sports teams and societies, there’s plenty to choose from.  You can even create your own society or even adopt one that is inactivefind out more here.  I have been an active part of the university and the student union throughout my time here – enjoying roles as a course rep, mentor for international students and a part-time officer – and it continues to be a rewarding experience which has provided me with great friendships and learning opportunities

  • Learning never stops

With a brilliant city on our doorstep, learning doesn’t stop outside of the lecture hall. The city is full of amazing museums, libraries and cathedrals to explore which have enriched my experience as a student here. There is so much to do in and around the city centre, with easily accessible transport links to help everyone get around.

  • Reliable support

Last year saw international students across the globe faced unprecedented challenges. Those like myself who had travelled thousands of miles to study found themselves facing a pandemic far from home and their usual support structures - having to adapt to blended and online learning, gain support in new "bubbles" in their accommodation, and only meeting their peers and tutors virtually. The University’s Health and Wellbeing service is a great source of support and a service I would advise international students in particular to take advantage of. There are counsellors, mental health and wellbeing advisors and an international student advice team which are all available around the clock for any sort of support you need.

On a personal note, my time as an international student has been a positive experience, but that doesn’t mean there haven’t been challenges along the way As your new International Student’s part-time officer, I understand and appreciate the difficulties international students face and want you all to know that I am here for you and am committed to supporting you throughout your student journey.
