Overlong lectures scrapped for students!

Hello, it’s Julia your VP Academic Quality here.

I want to let you know about an important change we have made at LJMU to make life better for students!

I work with Course Reps across LJMU to understand what the student experience is like and what might need to change.

This year I have received feedback from a number of Course Reps that there are modules on some courses at LJMU that include three to four hour long lectures (with no break!). Students told me that this is an extremely long time to spend in a lecture, and it’s not fair on students or even the lecturer to be expected to concentrate for this long.

I took this information to my meetings with the university, and as a direct result of this feedback, these lectures have now been completely scrapped for the next academic year!

Instead, in longer teaching blocks there will now always be a range of learning activities rather than one long lecture - for example, a lecture and then a seminar, or practical session in a lab. This will make for a more engaging, enjoyable and productive learning experience for everyone.

This change is all down to you giving your feedback, so thank you and please continue to tell us what’s good at LJMU and what needs to change.
