The Brain Charity offers emotional support, practical help and social activities to anyone with a neurological condition and to their family, friends, and carers. There are hundreds of different neurological conditions, including stroke, brain injury, dementia, cluster headaches, and many rarer ones too - we are here for every single one.
Our mission is to enable all those affected by neurological conditions to live longer, healthier, happier lives. We will fight together for an inclusive and just society: a world where stigma, hardship and isolation are replaced by compassion and understanding. Being diagnosed with a neurological condition can be a frightening and bewildering experience; many people face unemployment, poverty and social isolation as a result.
Based in Liverpool city centre, we offer a range of services within Merseyside & Cheshire including, but not limited to: counselling, welfare benefits advice, adult learning courses, confidence building courses, support groups for different conditions, employment support, carers advocacy, a legal service and supported volunteering opportunities. We also offer a national information & advice service which includes a library open to the public and a national helpline.
Overview
The Brain Charity’s befriending volunteers telephone service users who may benefit from an informal conversation. These calls are usually once a week, and can last up to an hour.
The calls aim to support and enhance our clients’ emotional and social wellbeing, as many are vulnerable and socially isolated, by providing a ‘listening ear’. Your support may also include remotely supporting people to set up IT such as Zoom so they can access our online activities.
Volunteers may befriend one person or more, depending on how much time you are able to give. After each call, volunteers are asked to record a brief overview of the conversation.
Full and relevant training will be provided as required. You must be happy to use your own equipment to make calls, as all work is currently being done from home.
As a Brain Charity volunteer, you will form part of our enthusiastic and committed community. Volunteers are the life blood of our organisation.
