JMSU – It Starts With You
Liverpool John Moores University Students’ Union represents all LJMU students. As a student, you are central to deciding how the organisation is led and the priorities we commit to achieve. We have a constitution which outlines how we run the organisation that has been developed with student trustees. You can read this document here
Each year we give you the chance to vote in our annual Student Officer elections; our four successfully elected Officers are paid a salary, work full-time within JMSU and are responsible for the day to day running and decision making. They also sit on the JMSU Trustee Board, which is our overall governing body.
We give you the opportunity to not only vote, but to stand for election yourself if you are passionate about leading the Students’ Union and making positive change for LJMU students - any student can do this either part way through your course (as a sabbatical year) or after your final year (to take up the position when you graduate). Elections usually take place around March time and you will need to put yourself forward before then. There are four positions available; President, Vice President Activities, Vice President Academic Quality and Vice President Community Engagement.
Your Student Officers
You can contact your JMSU Student Officers at any time. They have been elected to represent you and welcome suggestions on improvements that could be made to students’ experiences of the University, Union or wider student life in the City. If you think there should be a campaign on a particular issue that affects students – then you can suggest it. You can find their contact details in our Get In Touch section.
Officers are held to account, through a process called a scrutiny panel. The panel holds all full-time Officers to account on their remit, manifesto, and policy as part of our constitution. The Panel meet to discuss the work delivered by the Officers and rate their performance. The Panel produce short reprts that are published for all students to see on the website.
How can I hold my officers to account as an LJMU student?
Students may submit questions to the panel for the Officers to answer which cover anything appropriate to their remit, manifesto or JMSU Policy.
You can find out more about the Scrutiny Panel, how to submit a question or read the panel reports here.
Annual General Meeting (AGM)
This meeting happens once a year and is a great way for you to find out more about how we are run and what we’ve been up to over the past year. More details about the upcoming and previous AGM’s can be found here.
You could put yourself forward to be one of our Student Trustees. We have 4 of these (in addition to our 4 Student Officers who are also trustees and our 3 Community Trustees). You can register your interest in becoming a trustee here. You can find out more information about our Trustee Board here. All available positions will be advertised here or you can email the trustee board secretary to register your interest if we are not currently recruiting on firstname.lastname@example.org
Clubs and Societies
All of our clubs and societies are run by LJMU students. You can find out more information on how you can get involved with them here. If there isnt a club or society that takes your fancy you can submit a request to start your own here.
