Update from JMSU Executive Officer Team

Tuesday 17-03-2020 - 13:46

Like many of you, JMSU is concerned about the COVID-19 Pandemic and its impact on students, society and our everyday life. We have been working closely with the University since the start of the crisis to plan for a number of outcomes. Whilst much of this happening behind doors in countless meetings, we would like to assure students that staff at LJMU are working tirelessly, doing everything possible to ensure the right support and guidance is in place for you.

Closing face-to-face teaching early is not a decision any university takes lightly and whilst there are a number of issues created by this action, we believe this is an unprecedented situation, one that is evolving constantly and rapidly and therefore requires unprecedented action. The health and wellbeing of our students and staff is paramount and we support this decision in helping safeguard our campus and those at the heart of our university community and wider.

Understandably, there are a number of questions now being asked regarding continuation of studies, how you will be assessed and the knock on effects for the remainder of the academic year. Please be assured that JMSU is working in alongside the University to ensure all these questions are answered. We encourage all students to keep informed as to how the changes to the operation of the University impact on them by visiting https://www.ljmu.ac.uk/about-us/information-on-coronavirus regularly and if you have any further questions to email your programme leader, School Office or IMT@ljmu.ac.uk It is crucial you keep checking your University email too.

We understand this is an unsettling time with the suggestion of social-distancing, self-isolation and quarantine unnerving for those who need to stay away from home until the end of the academic year, those who may not originally be from the U.K. or who have family and friends affected by the pandemic. We don’t want you to feel alone or nervous so we plan, where we can, to instigate online hangouts, facilitate interaction by social media and by providing a constant source of information on what happens next…or simply by answering an email or tweet.

As face-to-face activity reduces our work at JMSU does not simply stop, like colleagues in the University we will adapt and align our services to better suit you in this current situation. We promise to continue representing you and raise those issues that affect your student experience. We will focus on:

1.    Ensuring there is clear and consistent communication to you regarding the situation and how this affects your studies;

2.    Working with you and the University to represent your interests and minimise impact;

3.    Ensuring that we continue to support the health and wellbeing of students at LJMU wherever they may be during the course of this pandemic

This situation is complex and fast moving and it could feel like things are out of your control, but whether on-campus or spread over the world, you are part of the LJMU community and there is always someone you can speak to if you need help or support.

We have stripped back our web pages to ensure this situation is at the forefront of our activity and we will update information and activity regularly. Please keep speaking with us and stay healthy.
