Mollie's Mission went and took part in the Panel debat organised by Student Minds. This was an amazing, frank and open panel debate with Angela Samata.

It mainly covered 3 key questions:

  1. What are the key stressors for students?
  2. If you or someone you know, have used mental healt and well being services while being a student: What was was your experience like/was it wasy to find the right support? What services are available
  3. What one thing could univeristy do to improve mental health?

It was great to see students being able to talk about their experiences and give help and advice to students seeking help

The main things to take away from this panel debate were

  • Don't be embarrased to ask for help
  • Ensure you seek out adult services in advance before even applying to uni
  • Being open made it easier for me however you only need to tell people you trust, people don't need to know

The students thought the univeristy could improve by:

  • Providing training for personal tutors
  • Provide awareness of acohol consumption and links
  • Providing mechansims of self care and prevention techniques

What can you do now?

Student minds and Angala gave some great things on what you can do to help break the stigma of mental health:

  • You don't need to drink - a lot of the time if you don't make a fuss about not drinking people don't realise
  • Join a society - find people similar minded to you
  • Read Jordan B. Peterson - The 12 Rules of Life
  • Suicide Prevention training - it only takes 20 minutes

If you need any support at all make sure you access the support that is available to all LJMU sudents - https://www.ljmu.ac.uk/discover/student-support/health-and-wellbeing

JMSU also has an advice service seperate from the univeristy that also helps support mental health and wellbeing - https://www.jmsu.co.uk/new-website-home/advice-service/mental-health-and-wellbeing/mental-health-wellbeing
